Roller-skating ~ Geriatric Style

The kids have been begging to go roller-skating, literally since last spring. I’ve been deflecting.

Repeatedly.

In my defense, I did take them one day in April, but the rink owners forgot about the homeschool skate and I had a van full of screaming children. Not so fun.

Today, while my husband was off helping at church, I somehow thought it was the PERFECT time to take all four of my non-skating children to the rink.

You do the math and let me know how I was thinking I could keep them all moving and upright. My brilliance at times can be overwhelming.

But those roller-skating rink people…they are the smart ones. I think a tired mother came up with this idea.

The girls got brave…

And I even had a little break from pushing Kaleb around the rink…

The kids had so much fun and as I was pushing Kaleb around he was little squealing and yelling over the music ~ “This is SO MUCH FUN and the best day EVER!!! woohooooooooooo!”

But ohhhhh…my aching back and feet.

  1. Oh my gosh! That is greatness! We'll have to look into that skate rink, the owners of ours isn't nearly as clever!

  2. That looks like so much fun! Reminds me of the time I took my kids ice skating for the first time. The rink had big plastic paint buckets turned upside down for the kids (and moms) to hold on to.

  8. Oh, I wonder if our skate rink has those. My friend I were talking about going skating, but she's afraid to go with all her little ones because she's 5 months pregnant and is afraid the kids would tip her over. I bet she could even push the 1 1/2 yr old around with these... assuming they have skates for one so young! :D

  9. That is hilarious! I love it. It's been a long, long time since we've been roller skating. So, um, did you see any grown-ups using those? You know, in case we decide to go roller skating any time soon.

  11. Oh I just love those walkers/skaters(?)! Now if I could just figure out how to adapt those for ice-skating I'm sure it would be a hit here in South Africa!

  12. Those are awesome little walkers!!! The ice rink over here uses something similar, but the rollar skating rink does not. I may have to tell them about this. :)

  13. How wonderful! Good for you. I wonder if such things exist here in the UK. If they do, even I may take my children... I'm a non-skater too.

  15. Tell them next time, they're on their own. You'll be shocked and amazed at how quickly they pick it up on their own without Mommy and the supports to help. That's what we were encouraged to do (by the rink staff) with my boys and ice skating - and by the end of the first time, my 5yo was off skating on his own away from the wall. My 3yo hung to the wall a bit longer, but not much. Now, three years later, we go ice skating as a family every chance we get (once a week during the school year when the rink has homeschool skate at a reduced rate). You'll love seeing the kids improve and not having the ache in your back at the end of the day!
