The Bible in 90 Days…Again

Yes. I have read the Bible in 90 Days before. With WONDERFUL success. Which is why when I saw a few tweets going around today I thought, “Why not?”

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, there’s a group reading through the Bible in 90 Days. If you thought about it before, can I just encourage you…

DO IT!!!

It has been an amazingly wonderful process for me ~ enough so that I honestly look forward to doing it again.

I’m splitting up the reading between my new Bible {so I can make some mark-ups in it} and keeping track of my reading using YouVersion {did you know they have a Bible in 90 Days reading plan?? If you don’t use YouVersion, you can also download this handy bookmark to print off and stick in your Bible.

Bible in 90 Days {#B90Days} ~ Week 13 Check-in

After reading bunches on vacation this week and managing to stay on track, I’ve decided that I really like the book of 2 Corinthians. It may just be things that I’m going through at this point in life, but there were several things that just struck me while reading this week.

In 2 Corinthians 3, verses 6 and 17, Paul talks about the Spirit and the LIFE that exists where the Spirit of the Lord is. And where the Spirit is…there is FREEDOM.

A bit later in 2 Corinthians 4:7-9, I love the image of a ‘treasure’ being inside a jar of clay ~ and also knowing that:

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

2 Corinthians 4:8-9

As of today, I have only four more days left until I am finished up with my reading, so I will be wrapping up my reading on Day 88. This is my second time having read the Bible from cover to cover, and both times were while following along with the Bible in 90 Days Challenge hosted by Mom’s Toolbox.  Amy will be starting the challenge back up again in January if you are interested in joining along.

Bible in 90 Days {#B90days} ~ Week 12 Check-in

I am loving reading through the gospels. I think it’s interesting that so often when Jesus performed miracles, he would tell whomever he had healed to not tell anyone {which they of course did}. Then there is one instance in Luke when Jesus actually told someone to go and tell ~ and I wonder what the difference was between the two occasions.

Reading through the gospels is also so interesting to see the different accounts/viewpoints between the four men. The approaches are all different, and yet each shared different tidbits that help round everything out together.

Last week I didn’t ‘check-in’ and update on my status…mainly because we had company the week prior and that put me so far behind it was almost overwhelming.

Ok…it was VERY overwhelming.

While many were plowing through the New Testament, I had a lot of reading to still finish up in the Old Testament, basically from Nahum on. I should have been on Day 71…but was still on about Day 66. Starting Thursday I tried to catch up as best I could and did manage to make it to the NT and then today {Sunday}, I finished up the rest of the reading for this week also. As of today, I finished Day 77…meaning I only have 11 more days of reading and I will be done!

Bible in 90 Days {#B90days} ~ Week 10 Check-in

I’m only one day behind!!! Hooray!! It was really encouraging to me this past week when I was trying to find my place in the Bible {since a certain little 3 year old shut my Bible on me} ~ and I realized that I am over 2/3 of the way through the reading!

Reading through the prophets has been somewhat sad for me. I can honestly say that I don’t envy their jobs and callings one bit. While reading through Jeremiah at the beginning of the week, I had a picture of him sitting and watching the potter.

And then my mind switched over to the potter and the thoughts that must have been going through his head when he looked up and saw Jeremiah sitting there: “Oh GREAT!! It’s that doom and gloom prophet again. There goes my business for the day!” I know that Jeremiah was right and following what God was calling him to do ~ but I still don’t envy the man the hatred and contempt that was poured out on him during his life.

We have family in this week visiting and I’m hoping to stay on top of my reading ~ especially knowing that by the end of next week we’ll be through the book of Matthew!!

I was really hoping to get completely caught up this week, since I was a little behind last week in my reading. As of tonight I am finishing up Isaiah…meaning I’m still a little behind.

Excuses? Yup. I got some. We went camping and I did bring my Bible along to read, but ended up focusing more on keeping Kaleb from going face first into the fire pit instead.

I’m ok with that {grins}.

Laurianna is still doing a great job keeping up with her reading and her readings have been a part of her daily school routine {which she rather likes}. As for me…this week I’m going to be spending my free time reading and catching up. Being out of Psalms is making the reading much easier, so I’m hoping it will actually go much more quickly.

Just a quick update because we have bunches of people coming over in a few hours, so I really need to focus on dinner and making the house somewhat presentable {grins}.

This past week was full of craziness and time at the hospital ~ a new nephew being born, Kaleb still being sick {he’s much better now}, getting everything all set for us to start school today…so I know for sure that I am at least 2 days behind, but I am definitely past the halfway point ~ so YEAH!!! I’m still playing catch-up from lack of sleep and a few other things, but will have it all in place in the next day or two {I hope!}.

Bible in 90 Days {#B90Days} ~ Week 7 Check-in

Despite my attempts last week, I didn’t catch up fully on my reading until later this week. It was really driving me nuts and throwing much out of whack in my mind because I knew that I was SIX days behind…and that really overwhelmed me.

I chunked out the reading and read in spurts throughout the course of two days, and mentally promised myself that if I could get back on track I would be able to sit down and read a ‘fluff’ book.

Motivation that apparently worked. I am actually a little bit ahead at the moment and also finished up a great book yesterday.

We’ve been reading through much of Psalms this week and it’s going much easier for me this time than the last reading through…for which I am very thankful! Laurianna also got a little bit behind in her reading, so the two of us have been encouraging each other along and trying to read together too. I am so proud of her for trying to keep up and do the challenge along with me! :)

This week has been one of ‘crunch-time’ for me. We’re gearing up for the start of a new school year, I have {what seems like} a gazillion deadlines looming over me…and while I have been reading for the challenge, I am NOT up to date.

I haven’t emailed the girls I’m mentoring this week {I’m so sorry!!!} and after I get a few thing finished tonight {Sunday}, I’m hoping to get a little closer to on target for this week. As of tonight, I am in 2 Chronicles and hoping to finish that up…and only be about 2 days behind.

Bible in 90 Days {#B90days} ~ Week 5 Check-in

As of 10:34pm on Sunday night I'm still in 2 Kings, and a little less than 2 days behind. Assuming that I can keep my eyes open for a bit longer, I’m hoping that I can finish it off in just a bit.

The one thing that stuck out to me this week out of everything that I read was something about Elijah. After standing up against all the prophets of Baal, calling down fire from heaven and having rain delivered…he ran from Jezebel because she threatened him.

That just boggles my mind.

Anyway, here’s a little glimpse of what I’m looking at right now. My laminated bookmark that I’m slowly, but surely checking off the days and keeping track of things…

Bible in 90 Days {#B90Days} ~ Week 4 Check-in

Just a quick update this week. No deep notes or thoughts. Basically, I’m about a day behind and sincerely hoping that I can catch up tonight after this post.

Should life go according to plan {haha}.

Laurianna has been reading along with me during the challenge. Not at the pace that I am reading, but she has her own Bible in 90 Days reading checklist for 9-12 year olds that we printed off and she put in her Bible.  Here she is set up next to me and working on her reading {and she got a little behind while at camp}.

Just makes this even more fun for me to read now!

Bible in 90 Days ~ Check in Week 3

This past week I somehow thought that I would have all the time in the world to read and even manage to sneak ahead. We were on vacation and missing two of our kids at camp…and while I was able to spend a few days reading in bulk, the majority of the days were spent playing and having fun.

Which was really ok by me!

Turns out, when all was said and done, I’m only a few chapters behind where I should be. Hooray!! I only made a few notes this week…because really. There’s only so much in Leviticus and Numbers that grab at you, other than the repetition and the endless ways of sacrificing.

The two things that I noted:

~ Israel’s history would have been VERY different {non-existent even} if some of the rules put into effect in Leviticus had been told earlier {Leviticus 18}. Verses 9 and 18 about marrying a sister and/or not being able to marry sisters would have nixed the relationships of Abraham & Sara and also Jacob and Leah/Rachel.

~ Numbers 29:7 just hit home with me this week {being on vacation and al} ~ You must deny yourselves and do no work.

I brought along a DVD for the kids to watch during our trip {captive audience and all} ~ the latest What’s in the Bible DVD, Wandering in the Desert. All about Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Truthfully, I was giggling and laughing along with the kids since I had finished reading most of the stuff ~ and if anyone can make you laugh at those three books of the Bible, Phil Vischer can. These videos sum up ever-so-nicely a weeks worth of reading. :)

Bible in 90 Days ~ Round 2 Begins!

I was just going to mentor a group of ladies for the second blog round of the Bible in 90 Days…and then thought that it would be much better if I participated along WITH the ladies again. I’ve been taking notes again as I do my daily readings and also thinking about the questions that come along with the daily emails from the B90Days folks.

Incidentally, I have a GREAT group of ladies that I’m reading along with and am very excited to have them join up!

I’m finishing up today’s reading after I post this, but had a second to sit down and collect my thoughts.  I pulled up my past B90Days posts to see what I had taken notes on the last time and LOVE the fact that not a single one of my notes double over what caught my attention the last time I read through this passage. Of course that doesn’t mean that I didn’t have some similar thoughts…but I love how re-reading is giving me different insight.

~ Abraham didn’t have a household…he had a small town! Gen 14:14 says he had 318 trained men born in his household. That doesn’t include untrained men, women and children.

~ The time lapse from when Abraham was promised a son until the time Isaac was born…about 16 years to see the fulfillment of that promise!

~ The covenant that God made with Abraham was specifically through Isaac {Gen 17:21}

~ This statement from Abraham to God seemed almost poignant {Gen 17:18}  “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing.” and later when Esau talks to Isaac {Gen 27:38} “Do you have only one blessing?”

~ In Genesis 32 Jacob is clinging to what God has promised him! He reminds God and claims what was previously spoken over him.

~ never noticed that Jacob came home and saw his father after he had been out living with Laban {Gen. 35:27}

~ How long do you suppose Simeon was waiting in jail before his brothers returned for him? It says that they did not return until their grain sacks were empty…meaning they went through 9 sacks of grain before heading back!

~ Do you suppose the trip the brother’s had to take back to pick up Jacob was filled with a LOT of anxiety about how they were going to explain that they had LIED to their father so many years ago?

~ This just made me laugh out loud!!! Joseph’s parting words to his brothers {Gen. 45:24} “don’t quarrel along the way.”

~ love the relationship {and wisdom} between Moses and his father-in-law Jethro. Jethro gives Moses advice about handling the masses…and then wisely says “if you do this and God commands”.

Bible in 90 Days Challenge Starts Today!!

If you've been thinking about joining along in reading the Bible in 90 Days, it’s not too late to join! The Challenge starts again today {and there are even a few ‘grace’ days built into the schedule}.

You don’t need to use a special Bible {unless you want to}, just print off the reading plan bookmark to use. I’m excited to use a new Bible that I recently purchased ~ one without footnotes so I’m not distracted.

You can also sign up for daily emails from the Bible in 90 Days ministry. I didn’t do it the last time, but signed up for it this go-round. Amy at Mom’s Toolbox will also be hosting Twitter parties using the #B90Days hashtag ~ you can read more about the challenge on her blog.

The 90 days that I participated in the program from January to March were wonderful! Yes, it’s a lot of reading, but I can honestly say it’s reading that I would prefer over any other. Looking back, it is something that really helped me shift my priorities and focus onto what was REALLY important in my life — the Word of God being the center. I learned so much through the process and am excited to start again with a different version in hand this time to see what God reveals to me in this 90 days.

You all might remember that from January to March I participated in the Bible in 90 Days reading program ~ and finished up my reading at the end of March. It was the first time that I read through the Bible from cover to cover and truly was one of the best experiences!

Yes, it was a lot of reading, but so incredibly worth it!

Bible in 90 Days {B90} ~ Day 88 Check-in

It’s official!! Last night {Day 87} I read the last page of Revelation, closed my Bible and FINISHED READING THROUGH THE BIBLE.

Sorry for shouting.

Needless to say, I’m a wee bit excited. For me this has been a huge accomplishment personally and saying I’m 'proud’ of myself seems wrong {grins}, so excited pretty much sums it up.

I went between two different Bibles this week, so my notes & underlinings are all over the place ~ so I feel a bit scattered in my thoughts on what I read.  My reading this week was from the beginning of 2 Corinthians through Revelation.

Here are a few things that I marked and jotted down this week:

~ So much of the things I read this week were a huge encouragement {obviously since they were letters written to various churches}, but hearing repeatedly of all the Christ did for us was wonderful. Love this verse:

‘God made you alive with Christ. He forgave all our sins. He canceled the record that contained the charges against us. He took it and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ’s cross.’

Colossians 2:13b-14

~ I know we are told to live each day as if Christ is returning soon, but I wonder how the early Christians felt as the years progressed and Christ had not returned as quickly as they thought he would.

~ The persecution that the early church endured ~ and that we are so fortunate to not endure right now.

~ The whole issue of discipline {both for myself and what it means as a parent}

‘No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening ~ it is painful! But afterward there will be a quiet harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. So take a new grip with your tired hands and stand firm on your shaky legs.’

Hebrews 12:11-12

There was so.much.more that I enjoyed this week, but you all would be overwhelmed if I listed it all out. Let’s just say there was lots of underlining, much conviction, plenty of encouragement and even more to ponder.

Bible in 90 Days ~ B90 Day 81 Check in

It’s the final stretch and in all honesty, I’m rather shocked! While I know that I was determined to finish this from the beginning, I am still amazed that I am one week away from completely reading through the Bible.

Consistently.

This week I didn’t read everything in order, but chose to read entire books at a time. I was in the mood to read 1 Corinthians, so I read the entire book one day. The next day I read all of Romans. Here I am at the start of 2 Corinthians and barring any major diversion this week, next Monday will be my last post in the Bible in 90 Days Challenge!

Here are a few things that I marked and jotted down this week:

~ The book of John seems a little more ‘in-depth’ than the other gospels. There are a few more stories, etc… I am amused that John refers to himself by always saying ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved.’ Just made me smile.

~ Even his own brothers didn’t believe him {John 7:5} ~ just find that incredibly sad and wonder what Mary must have been thinking

~ The blind man in John 9 became quite the witness for Jesus! :)

~ Jesus had a lot of ‘slipping away’ moments where he disappears when the leaders are ready to arrest him.

~ What would it have been like when Jesus washed Judas’ feet during the last supper? It says he washed all their feet and Judas hadn’t left yet. What was going through each of their minds during that time? 

~ Did the 40 men who took an oath not to eat until Paul was killed die of starvation…or did they break their oaths? {Acts 23:14} Just wondering…

~ Have I mentioned that I love Romans? I do. No longer a slave to sin, but free. So much in this one book.

~ 1 Corinthians 14 just brought some new light to me on a few things personally {which I love}. :) Way too much to sum up and explain in here, but it’s all good!

Bible in 90 Days {B90} ~ Day 74 Check-in

I have to admit, when I looked at my bookmark yesterday and realized that there are only TWO more weeks left to this challenge, I about fell over.

This check-in post is a day late in coming, but I’ll be honest and say I got behind last week and had little time to catch up until Sunday night and yesterday. Since we’re SO CLOSE to the end, I can’t fall off the B90 wagon in the New Testament ~ especially since I managed to make it through Leviticus and all the major prophets. To quit now would just be … well, it won’t happen!

The New Testament is so much more lovely to read. While I am definitely more familiar with things in the first four books, there were a few things that I underlined and wondered about:

• Love when Jesus talks about vows ~ ‘just a simple yes or no is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.’ {Matt 5:37}
• Never realized that John the Baptist had his own group of disciples.
• It amused me that John’s disciples were all bent out of shape that they had to fast, but Jesus’ disciples did not {Matt 9:14}
• Made me laugh when the disciples asked Jesus why he always told stories when talking to the other people.
• How many times Jesus told people he healed to ‘not talk to anyone’ about what had happened ~ and they promptly left and spread the news to everyone.
• The disciples at times never cease to amaze me ~ love that they asked Jesus what his stories meant {Mark 4:10}. He used parables to speak in public and then would later explain their meaning to the disciples {Mart 4:33}.
• When Jesus sent the demons into the herd of pigs, only Mark mentions how many ~ 2,000! I’m guessing the pig’s owners were none-too-pleased! {Mark 5:13}
• Jesus sends his disciples out two by two to cast out demons and just a short while later, after He feeds the 5,000 and walks on water they still had hardened hearts and ‘did not believe.’ {Mark 6:52}
• Love that there are 4 different perspectives on Christ’s ministry ~ and two different genealogies showing his lineage from both his mother and father.

Two weeks left! After this I am planning to take a little break from this intensive reading, but I am hoping to start at the beginning of May ~ this time reading chronologically in a 6 month time frame. :)

Bible in 90 Days {B90} ~ Day 67 Check-in

Officially, I have finished the Old Testament. This week the readings went from Ezekiel to Zechariah. Truthfully, there were days when I was thinking I couldn’t get out of the Old Testament soon enough ~ but that seems almost sacrilegious to say.

But for Daniel this week, I believe I might have been swimming in a see of doom. The more I continue to read though, I am determined to read through again chronologically to put some of this all into an even better perspective ~ specifically how the prophets all fit in to the timeline of kings, etc… I think reading it in order will help to see how prophecies are fulfilled and give me a grasp on where Israel was as a country.

All that aside, here are a few of the things that I jotted down this week during my reading:

• Ezekiel not being able to grieve when his wife died…wow. In today’s society I could see him being tried for pre-meditated murder or something since he told everyone it would happen and then it did.
• It would be so helpful {while reading Ezekiel} to have maps around that show where these cities are in relation to those that are attacking them.
• The comparison of Israel and Judah to prostitutes was umm…interesting {Day 61}
• Love the ‘Good Shepherd’ analogy in Ezekiel 34
• Ezekiel started out more ‘doom & gloom’ and then somehow turned into a re-hashing of Leviticus {laws, etc…}
• Ezekiel 40 ~ I would love a virtual tour of the temple that Ezekiel in envisioning. Just so I can picture what he is seeing in my own mind.
• Amazed at the SPECIFIC measurements in his vision of the temple ~ why is that?
• In Daniel 1:6 ~ the King attempted to change their names in an attempt to change them. Each one of the men’s Hebrew names involved the name God/Lord. Their new names attempted to change them to other gods.
• Why {when we talk about Daniel} do we always refer to him by his Hebrew name, but the other three we use their Babylonian names? Makes me determined to learn their other ones and call them by those ~ especially knowing what their new names mean.
• Daniel 2:24 ~ Daniel chose not to let the imposters be killed after they interpreted the king’s dream incorrectly. He is a much better man that I would have been.
• Daniel 3:16 ~ Love the words from the men in the furnance ~ “He will rescue us…. but even if He doesn’t…” Such confidence, but also completely secure in their God!
• Chapter 4 in Daniel ~ what a horrible feeling to know what the king’s dream meant {him becoming like a beast in the fields} and have to relay that.
• Never realized that there were 4 kings during Daniel’s time in Babylon

That’s it for this week ~ of course there were lots of other prophets…but my brain hurts just thinking about some of the stuff. :) Next week ~ the New Testament!!!
