“My children must attach themselves to the Vine, not me ... I can and must model for them what life as a ‘branch’ looks like and show them ways to stay ‘attached’ … but I cannot be their ‘vine’.”

~ Sally Clarkson, Ministry of Motherhood, p. 131-132

I’ll be honest and say that during my reading this week I just sat thinking “I really wish that some of these thoughts would flow from my brain to my mouth for my children when we are in this situation.”  In reality, my mind goes blank, I often feel that I have nothing of value to share and I’m just grasping for a ‘reason’ when talking to our children about an important issue.

It’s in these moments that I realize how much and how often I really need to depend on the Holy Spirit for guidance and be attached as a branch to the Vine, because that is where TRUE wisdom is found. I need to dig deeper. Rely more. Demonstrate my dependence on God and how important He is in my life, which in reality should NOT be that difficult, since I know how much I need Him.

My children, better than anyone, know and see my shortcomings on a daily basis, so when I am fully relying on HIM and walking in His strength, it is most evident. There are so many things that I know I can do to incorporate God’s word and truth into our daily lives…and so many excuses that I’ve put together not to do those things.

This week, we’re going to start back doing one very important thing ~ reading the Bible together each day and doing devotions together. The kids have been doing them independently, but I’m feeling so much that we need to be a part of this with them and learn/study together as a family ~ especially so that we as parents can share our insight and struggles as they relate to things we study.

“Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful apart from me.”

John 15:4
